OT Chas, I lightly daytrade so I have an account with Landmark Securities. They provide me with Level II(the MM's), charting, quotes, tickers etc. With all of this you do bypass the broker, and can actually "see" your trades go through. The nice thing about having Level II is that you don't have to trade on the bid and the ask because you have the ability to trade with other traders in the spread. So, even though there are monthly fees on this account it is definately worth it if you trade frequently, and if you make more than 100 trades in a month the fee is waived. Commissions are appx $20. Daytrading service providers vary greatly in the quality of service they provide. You can usually get a feel for what they are like just by visiting their site, and maybe a phone call.
If you were going to consider doing this the first two sites I would check out are: www.mbtrader.com (I recommend this service the most) www.elitetrader.com (an informative site to learn about daytrading)
