I have a problem with the whole medical system. If I have a
headache, I can go buy something over-the-counter.
Now we know that probably 60-80% of all stomach ulcers are caused by h-pylori and we have a kit that detects the presence of that bacteria.
(About 18 months ago only 2% of all doctors were treating stomach
ulcers as if they were caused by h-pylori. They are now being educated.) There are two prescription drugs on the market that are specifically labelled to fight h-pylori. If you take those drugs you are cured in 12 days. In fact I read a report in the WSJ, written by 3 doctors, that said that if a patient came in, exhibiting the usual symptoms, it is so likely that they have h-pylori that you might as well prescibe the appropriate drugs. In 12 days you will know. Without testing. A small percentage of patients will be allergic to the drugs but that will be the case regardless of testing. This is the kind of resistance this stock is running in to.
Now to get back to the beginning of this posting. Why can't I go to
a pharmacy and purchase this test, it can't hurt me and then buy the drugs ?. I can buy self-test kits for pregnancy, cholesthoral etc.
I could even take the results of the test to the doctor. If I absolutely can't get the appropriate drug without a prescription.
I think I know the answers, and I do not like them.
I am still a holder of Quidel.
