John : The shares which are chosen as components of an index are usually the market leaders in that particular group. Hence, when there is a broad movement, all move together. Relative strength will depend on factors influencing each particular share.

So, if the market is being driven by psychological factors eg war or currency factors eg weakening of dollar or inflation, then all the shares move in tandem and the index is truly representative of all the shares in the group.

Since you like to use averages instead of discrete values, then the XAU index, which is in fact a weighted average, should appeal.

If you ask him nicely, Hutch will tell you the exact proportions of each share in the XAU mix.
