Neeny, you are absolutely correct. Survanta is made from homogenized cow lungs. Infrasurf is made from cow lung lavage. 1 vial of Survanta costs ~ $600 and is 8 ml. Dose is 4ml/kg & babies sometimes require more than 1 dose & more than 1 vial. Surfaxin is purely synthetic with a Surfactant protein analog mixed with surface active phospholipids. The dose required for treatment of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (for which DSCO has the use patent) is much greater, since this requires several lavages of the lung to wash out the meconium, and then a final lung instillation of concentrated Surfaxin to replace the surfactant that has been washed out by lavage. This would probably be cost prohibitive for Survanta, and couldn't be done anyway because of DSCO's use patent.
Regards,
Frank
