George,

Software is an issue. The FDM 1650 requires a person to spend 15 to 20 minutes setting up the build (setting up support structures and slicing the part). The Actua has taken this to the logical conclusion: send the part to the machine like a document to a printer. Except for special situations where supports need to be modified there is no reason this cannot be done for FDM as well.

A slightly more irritating issue with office modelers is the clean-up of support structure. Now that we've had the FDM 1650 in the lab for a few months I've learned to appreciate working with processes that require little (SLA, Cubital) or no (SLS) support structure. Because the support structure of FDM is built of the same material as the part, it is difficult to remove without breaking the part. From what I hear (we won't get ours until later this month) the Actua isn't too much better.
