You have to remember that Inktomi has other products than it's caching product. They have a key in the e-commerce sector with their search engine and [e-commerce] shopping engine. Both products are for the foreseeable future very well entrenched and gaining steam.

They also have deals with big name companies like AOL, Concentric, PSINet, AmeriTech and @Home just to name a few. That's big league company to be hanging around with.

So for Novell's cache system to "capture" a portion of the caching market, they will have to make some NOISE. I do think that with Dr. Schmidt's past experience with ISPs, the ICS product will find many homes sooner than later. With partners like DELL and CPQ, ICS will find more homes faster in the small to medium size companies where Inktomi products don't make fiscal sense.

That's a HUGE market to gather for Novell which will translate into immediate revenue growth. From that point on, Novell can make in-roads into Inktomi's traditional "turf" with directory-based caching, proxy services and more.

Let's remember, Inktomi is a VERY specialized product maker that is mainly geared towards heavy-duty shops. You can look at this Inktomi vs Novell as we have with Active Directory vs. NDS [yes, I know that ICS is shipping where AD isn't]. Inktomi has been at this for some time now and understands their product and how it works while Novell is more the "new kid" on the block [with a great new doggie!].

I won't count Inktomi out just yet but I wouldn't say they will win either..... :)
