PB, thread, anybody ever heard of Penguin Computing? (they are really pushing Linux). Article below from the Sun thread, courtesy Michael Happel. I also went to the Penguin home page and they're just introducing AMD based PCs. Intel inside not.
Penguin Linux 8000 8-way Server Surprise Hit of Spring Internet World; Penguin Computing Unleashes Industry's Fastest Intel-based Machine At Internet World
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1999--Penguin Computing's new Linux 8000 8-way server has been a star attraction at the spring Internet World show this week in Los Angeles. Last week Penguin announced that it is the first and only company to offer the Linux 8000 8-way server, the fastest Linux servers ever built. "We've been overwhelmed by the expressions of interest we've had in the Penguin Linux server," said Penguin's founder and president, Sam Ockman. "We have already received well over 500 serious inquiries from prospective buyers of the system." The explosion of e-commerce has created a huge need for more powerful, cost-effective open system symmetric multi-processor (SMP) servers. But as companies scurried to enter the marketplace, they were confronted with only a handful of choices.
"We've just changed all that," Ockman commented, "with the introduction this week of our 8-way server for Linux, making us the first company in the nation to offer an SMP server which can fulfill all these needs. Companies can now confidently use a reliable Linux system for their high-end e-commerce and Internet operations rather than a Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW) server. So they can get the dependability without giving up any of the speed. "Penguin was successful in building the fastest possible Intel-based computer by combining an L3 cache design adopted from mainframe technology with the industry-standard Intel-Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC) Xeon processors. Ockman states that its Penguin Linux system, targeted for Internet and e-commerce companies, is the fastest Intel-based machine at Internet World.
"We're literally taking the high-tech world by storm at the show," saysOckman. "Our Penguin 8000 servers start at only $100,000 and are comparable in performance and reliability to the Sun Enterprise 3500 and other UNIX 8-way solutions that cost two or three times as much." More benchmarks will be released later this month by Penguin and NEC.
At Internet World, Penguin has also been demonstrating an interactive Internet financial application, leveraging Oracle8 on the 8-way Linux SMP server. This feature has attracted considerable attention from attendees at the event. Penguin Computing and the new Penguin Linux 8000 system can be found at the Oracle Pavilion during Internet World.
"We have built a solid reputation with leading E-commerce companies as the provider of choice for reliable, performance-driven Linux-based systems," says Ockman. "We are the one-stop shop for e-commerce solutions on Linux. Penguin Computing offers its customers the option of having Internet applications such as the Apache Web server and Oracle applications and databases pre-installed on all servers. The Penguin Linux 8000 8-way SMP server is the fastest, most scaleable system available for enterprises supporting large-scale Internet and e-commerce applications. The new system optimizes sequential data accesses for large databases and has the best performance of any Intel-based Linux system. Penguin is already working with leading Internet-based companies such as Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE), Excite (Nasdaq:XCIT), Paramount Pictures, Viacom (AMEX:VIA) and Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN), which enjoy quick deployment time and support for their Internet-focused businesses.
Penguin enjoys a competitive edge over its competitors such as HP (NYSE:HWP) and Compaq (NYSE:CPQ) because of its narrow focus and lower cost structure. It also has the most extensive testing and burn-in process in the Linux industry, far surpassing the big manufacturers. All products can be custom built and ordered through their Web site.
Penguin Computing was started by Open Source advocate Sam Ockman as a way of providing Linux solutions and knowledge to the fast-growing Open Source community. The company offers free standard technical support with all these systems as well as upgrades and on-site support 24 hours a day, 7days a week. Penguin Computing is currently a privately held company, and is seeking private placement financing.
