Hmmm. We intended that half a million Kosovans become refugees? We intended that farm tractors be bombed and dozens of Kosovan civilians killed? We intended that Russia retarget its missiles at Europe? Pretty dumb intentions, I would say.
The reality is that the "intended" consequences, if you go back about 27 days in the news, was that Milosovic would fold within one or two days. Remember the early prognostications: "This bombing campaign will only last two or three days"? "Milosovic won't endure the bombing for more than a few days"? Go back and review what our stated goals and time table were. Then tell me the bombing is having its intended consequences.
But since Milosovic didn't do what we Albright (stupidly, and contrary to the advice of everybody who knew him) thought he would do, we are in a mess with no way out except to totally destroy a former ally and its people, lay waste to an entire country, destroy tens or hundreds of thousands of lives, subject millions of people to food shortages and possible starvation, etc. All because we wouldn't reach a reasonable diplomatic solution to a problem that really has nothing to do with the United States and in which, compared to Somalia, the Sudan, Rawanda, East Timor, Tibet, Pakistan, etc. only a handful of people had died. Granted, even a handful of people are important and shouldn't die. But is this REALLY worth the death and destruction we are locked into? |
