*Long-Life Satellites* Thanks Oliver, so we can indeed save heaps of fuel with 'statistical coverage' rather than 'controlled orbit coverage', but I guess that is so far in the future that it isn't of much interest at present. I quite like the idea of random coverage - there would be less need for squads of satellite jockeys caring for each satellite. Saving a lot of gas is good too because the satellites would last for ages and enable cheaper calls.

ICO can't do that - another reason why they should cancel their system. At a guess, I suppose about 200 satellites would be needed for good random coverage. If there were surplus satellites in one area for a while, that wouldn't matter nor affect total capacity because they need recharge time so could just coast through the crowded sky, recharging, then use power when going through an empty patch of sky.

How about that Mr A?

It says: "...I think I* can only handle 2400 bps, while G* is 9600." That isn't right is it? I thought about 2500 bps for Globalstar.
