More on DT-Telecom Italia.

If they want my two-cents, I think DT should buy Sprint. If nothing else, they'd solve the ION problem over night.

Deutsche Telekom To Merge With Telecom Italia?

Industry observers say Deutsche Telekom AG and Telecom Italia SpA could be discussing a merger. Such a move would not only save Telecom Italia (Rome) from the hostile takeover bid of Olivetti SpA (Ivrea, Italy); it would also result in the largest telecom company in the world.

It would also likely mean the end of the Global One alliance, in which Deutsche Telekom (Bonn, Germany) has a strategic partnership with France Telecom SA (Paris). The future of the alliance was cast into doubt recently after reports that Sprint Corp. (Kansas City, Mo.) was leaving.

Such a union could also have political implications. The German government still owns 74 percent of its former PTT, and though a merger would dilute this to a minority stake, Italy may still object to a foreign government owning such a large portion of its telecom network. Sources say Italy would likely press for full privatization.

Neither carrier would comment, but Deutsche Telekom yesterday announced that it planned to strengthen its pan-European position through takeovers, funded by issuing new shares worth up to $2 billion.
