Carl,

Why would IBM want back in. Well first of all a lot has changed in the industry since the last time IBM had an option to buy Cryix processors. Let's list a couple:

(1) IBM can no longer make Cyrix Chips and sell them under their own name, therefore if they want into the X86 market they now have to finally do something.

(2) AMD ahs shown Intel is infact vulnerable.
(3) The market place has changed to one where you can probably make money without having the absolute fastest chip available.
(4) IBM is doing a big Java/Thin Client push again. A cheap CPU fits well into this mix. A cheap CPU like a MediaGX with an additional Java translation unit.

Those are just some of the reasons I see for IBM wanting Cyrix.
