If I recall correctly, according to the doctrine of chivalric love developed at Eleanor's court, love was impossible between husband and wife. Marriages were arranged, purely social contracts that had nothing to do with love. And "chivalric love" -- between Lady and Lover -- had nothing to do with consummation. In fact, ideally it was NOT consummated. The essence of chivalric love was the total devotion of the Lover to the Lady -- "dominion", as you put it. The devotion was ritualized to a high degree.
