almost no-one needs a phone..... Barrow Alaska etc beyond 70N.

As someone who made cellphone call from the shores of the Arctic Ocean in northern Alaska last summer, I have to say you are wrong.

Enough people need to make calls that AT&T has cellular towers up there. But that only covers a tiny area. The people up there are often out of cellular range, and what are they going to use?

Of course, most of us aren't employees of Oil companies, but there are many thousands of oil company employees around the globe, and who's going to provide service for them? If you're on a drilling platform in the middle of the ocean, Globalstar or ICO aren't even planning to offer service.

If you're a citizen of the city if Inuvik in Northwest Territories, Canada, you have no other choice but Iridium when you're not near a land line.

Sure, if there is enough population people put in cellphones, but to say that anywhere there aren't cell phones there isn't enough population density to offer sat service pretty well misses the point.
