John,

Thank you so very much for your post!

As a former software engineer myself, I find the entire problem to be tremendously overstated and overhyped. After all, one can easily explain everything about the problem to any first-year programmer in half an hour (then allow them a generous additional hour to spot any unforseen ramifications), and this person will have a complete understanding of the entire Y2000 issue.

So it's difficult to imagine many companies spending a lot of money for consultants when their own people can learn all there is to know in an hour.

Most of the Wall Street types evidently think of computers as big engines into which you can pour a special liquid and make things all right. ZITL, DDIM, and VIAS all have magic liquids--they'll all be rich!! But every program is going to require different tweaks, so there can't be any kind of uniform fix. And the tweaks can be done completely by inhouse staff (or close to minimum-wage temps).

I'm short on VIAS and DDIM (should probably be short on ZITL also).
