I agree with you that the Zip, or any other removable storage, will not "replace" the floppy for the reason you state - it simply isn't essential for all PC users. I would guess that most of the under $500 purchasers just want something they can use to play games and surf the net. They have no need to back up anything because they don't create anything to back up.

However, I"m betting that there is still a huge number of users who do create spreadsheets, tax returns, etc. and they will continue to need backup capability. IOM needs to become the standard for those users; if they do, they should have a decent business for the next few years.
