Or the privations of the girls who became wives to anything but the 5% of men on top of the socioeconomic heap. The same conditions apply in the country I live in, and in fact in most of the world, today. In these parts, a woman who selects a man on any grounds other than money and social status is regarded as weak in the head. Which is not to say that love is not involved. Wealth is simply the principal criterion for falling in love. The relative equality found in the US and Europe is more the exception than the rule.
