Michael, E-Trade actually does get some fairly hot IPOs. Clients can only get a very limited number of shares though, typically.

For instance, theStreet.com is IPO'ing the week of 4/26. They gave 5000 of their 35,000 subscribers (randomly selected) the IPO opportunity at the offering price ($11-13). Only 100 shares. I was picked. What the hell. Should be good for a quick $2K to $5K at the open. These subscriber shares are only available though E-Trade. I'm sure they have the vast majority of the 5.5M offered shares going to big underwriting firm clients.
