No, Joan, that is a popularized, short-hand version. A male cat kills the offspring of other cats. The behavior has survival value because it enhances the proportion of the male's genes passed on to the next generation. This teleology may be fashionable in the popular press but it is never acceptable in peer journals. I will PM you on this issue.
