re: "<Imagine code tuned for a K7>"

This is not very hard to imagine at all. First, the relationship between iNTEL and Microsoft, at one time regarded as close and very cooperative, has evolved into one more characterized by rivalry as Microsoft has perceived iNTEL as having made unwelcome incursions into areas that Microsoft has presumed to be its own proprietary software domains (What software domains do not qualify for this distinction anymore?). AMD, to my knowledge has made no such offensive (to Microsoft) incursions. Further, AMD is now powering total numbers of new "boxes" that in the most modest case rival those of iNTEL and have during certain periods, for certain huge categories exceeded those of iNTEL. Since Microsoft derives its market dominance, revenue, and income from shear "box count" numbers it is in Microsoft's best interests to support any AMD standards that may differ from those of iNTEL.
