November 1998 Alliance Airlines Featured in Cargo Security Pitch
Alliance Airlines', a Chicago-based cargo service company, is featured in a video designed to garner Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) support for an advanced cargo security system, which, if approved, could be installed in airports throughout the world. The system has already been endorsed by O'Hare's Deputy Aviation Commissioner, Richard Kunicki, and Aviation Commissioner Mary Rose Loney.
Richard Kunicki presented this system in Minneapolis, MN to a worldwide meeting of 250 airport security personnel. Each attendee was given a copy of the video to take back to his or her airport.
Alliance Airlines was the first company at O'Hare to enlist in the test of this heightened security system. A camera crew was brought to Alliance Airlines' Chicago (ORD) facility to film the security system in action. According to a spokesman for the security system, Alliance Airlines' 176,000 s.f. air cargo handling facility is a good representation of the system in action and, because Alliance Airlines' facility is just one year old, it taped well. In addition to using Alliance's warehouse, several of Alliance's employees are shown building and moving air cargo pallets throughout the video.
SecurCom developed the driver security system which combines "smart card" and biometric technology to tighten security of cargo delivered to airlines. The system requires shippers or their agents to register in the program and carry smart cards that contain tiny Central Processing Units which store load and manifest information. These cards are constantly updated to reflect the shipment in transit. When the driver makes delivery, this card is inserted into a reader and the driver places his thumb on a biometric scanner which verifies the identity of the driver and cross checks this information to the information contained on the smart card. SecurCom brought together industry leaders Schlumberger, Identix and Oracle to form an "engineering dream team" for the hardware, software and biometric package of this state-of-the-art security system.
The video reports that stricter air cargo security is needed throughout the world, especially since an increasing amount of cargo is loaded on passenger flights. It was estimated that as much as 60% of the cargo at O'Hare is loaded on passenger aircraft.
John Kirsten, vice president Biometric Security division of Identix, stated that this technology now being introduced at airports is a mature technology in use by thousands of companies around the world.
Alliance Airlines is a leading provider of scheduled interline road feeder services, airline cargo handling services and personnel services to over 70 international airlines. Alliance Airlines is based at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and has cargo service facilities in 12 U.S. cities.
