you are stating what Pheiffer's vision was.
I don't think it was Pfeiffer's vision, in fact I don't think he even understood the vision. This was mostly driven by John Rose with Rosen's support. If they get a new guy he will certainly be someone that Rosen believes will follow through.

I am in the camp that believes low-end strategy should be applied to high end products to be successful. For example I think Dell will eclipse Sun for that very reason
This is a hardware centric view of the high end which has not gotten any traction in the marketplace. Almost all customer surveys, and SUN's performance over the last year or so, contradict this. Not only has DELL made no inroads into the high end despite a compelling value proposition, but almost none of the "big four" have sucessfully done this using Intel-based systems. IBM and HP have pretty much gone back to Unix as their high end play. DELL will need a complete offering including services and tighter partnerships than they have today to make this happen (and they are moving to do this). CPQ is years ahead in doing this, but has had obvious failures of execution in 1998. I'm sure that's why Pfeiffer got the boot.
