I would agree with the compulsive gamblers observation, but I tend to think that a combination of greed and need for association are factors as well. I've seen where solid companies were mentioned and everyone jumped in only to sell immediately after realizing the "guru" had liquidated his position. All of the great fundamental reasons for the 'buy' were still in place, but the "guru" essentially stated that the thread no longer was interested in the issue.
