skeeter bug,

i run both defrag and disk scan via norton's utilities 3.0 on my pc. they are essentially what windows uses.

defrag has never, ever taken more than 10 minutes at the longest. and i have never shut down background apps when i defrag.

on the other hand, running disk doctor (norton's disk scan feature) can turn into quite a painfully long process, i.e, many hours, IF you select the thorough test instead of the normal test, and then opt to scan the entire disk area instead of the area used by files.

you might want to look into this as a possible reason for the marathon.

:)
