Kemble, if they fashion a strategy to try to stop Dell they will be committing suicide. The issue is not to stop Dell, it is to strengthen themselves where they are now. That means they must have better inventory control, and that means they must get rid of the channels (except for retail). VARs should not be forced to accept inventory, but should be shipped machines as needed and demanded by the VARs. That will eliminate the problems of carrying excess inventory, which will also free up capital and eliminate inventory obsolescence. They need to build at the high end server market and the service end. Those are the company's strengths. They have already ceded a lot of the desktop space to Dell, but emphasis on the high end will naturally reclaim some of the desktop losses. But I am a Dell investor. Why should I freely give my thoughts to CPQ?

The transition will be painful, but once done the company could resume its growth. If it continues to pussyfoot around the issue it is doomed.
