stsimon, every one can setup a flea market, but not every one can setup a flea market as big as ebay and keep getting bigger. The barrier of entry is the brand name and the first-mover advantage. Following your logic, Coca Cola couldn't have become as powerful as today because its barrier of entry was so low. How easy it was to make a bottle of worthless caramel syrup? As eBay's auction count gets to be above 4 million items for sale per week, absolute no body, not even Microsoft can blow it away any time soon. And we will see 4 million auction count later this year. All ebay needs is the critical mass, Doug said that eBay has reached that already.
