Well, if they can pull that off, I agree. But I would be surprised if Dell's supplier is actually doing that. That isn't a particularly smart way of doing business. Even if Dell is your largest customer and you need to maintain their business.
Still, in order to custom build their machines, Dell needs to work, in some way, similar to the procedure you describe. AAPL doesn't HAVE to. Would it be good if they did? Probably, but it isn't a necessity.
