Defrag the disk:

When I ordered my present system, I had them include Norton Systemworks, but I didn't install it right away. Anyway, one night my system started defragging by itself (scheduled task) and seemed to go on forever. Since it didn't interfere with my sleep, I paid no attention to it.

After installing Norton's stuff, I ran the defrag utility, expecting it to take quite some time to run. It finished in about ten minutes. Besides speed, it allows some useful options such as sorting filenames, and placing files and directories where you want them.

I'm not trying to plug the Systemworks package, but between finding and fixing system quirks, the speedy and convenient utilities, and the interesting 'monitors' you can put on your system, I couldn't imagine trying to keep things running smoothly without it. I think they charged me about $40 for it.

Hope this helps. PW.
