Pfizer Starts Sales of Viagra in Singapore; Malaysia in May
Singapore, April 19 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Ltd., a unit of New-York based drugmaker Pfizer Inc., today started sales of its Viagra male impotency drug in Singapore.
Orders for the drug have been strong, with initial shipments of ''more than 10,000 (50 milligram) four-pill packs'' more than enough to meet demand from pharmacies and hospitals, said Michael Khor, marketing director with Pfizer in Singapore. He wouldn't give a sales forecast for the drug.
The introduction of Viagra in Singapore will boost sales for Pfizer Inc., which sold $193 million worth of the drug in the first quarter of 1999 in international markets. The drug will be unveiled in Malaysia in May, Khor said.
About 100 million men worldwide are impotent, Pfizer Ltd. said in a statement. In Asia, 52 percent of Asian men between 40 and 70 in Asia need medication for the problem, Pfizer said.
In Singapore, Viagra will retail for about S$17 ($10) a pill, Khor said.
Zuellig Pharma Ltd., a privately held pharmaceutical company, has sole distribution rights for Viagra in Singapore. Zuellig Pharma Sdn. Bhd. a unit of Gold Coin Malaysia Bhd., a diversified feed-mill company, will distribute the drug in Malaysia.
Shares of Pfizer last traded Friday at 127 1/16, from 130 Thursday. |
