IMPERIAL TOBACCO SELECTS ASI's DDA SOLUTION FOR WAREHOUSE DATA COLLECTION/ERP INTEGRATION
Southfield, MI -April 19, 1999- Imperial Tobacco Ltd. (Montreal, Canada) has selected Advanced Systems International's ATLink(tm) DDA (data distribution and access) solution to integrate mobile warehouse data collection terminals at two of their plants that use SAP R/3 Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Imperial Tobacco, the leading Canadian manufacturer of tobacco products, is widely known for its top-selling du Maurier, Player's and Matinee cigarette brands. ATLink(tm) will be used at two of Imperial's manufacturing plants in Canada, but will be implemented first at Imperial's GLT (Green Leaf Threshing) plant in Aylmer, Ontario.
"The initial phase of the contract, valued at approximately $650,000, is a fraction of the cost of conventional integration based on point-to-point interfaces that rely on customized code," said Gerry Pesut, president and CEO of Advanced Systems International (ASI). "Imperial will realize significant cost savings due to the open-systems design of ATLink(tm). This added value is in line with ASI's competitive strategy that calls for 80% project completion at the installation phase and 20% from on-going maintenance. This allows ASI to transfer ownership of the application to the customer more quickly which is opposite of what happens in today's industry."
Over a year in development, ATLink(tm) was formally introduced in March 1999. ATLink(tm) meets all industry standard criteria for universal Data Distribution and Access software for ERP systems. It is a true client/server DDA solution that is platform driven, database-independent, scaleable and is built on non-proprietary, industry-standard modules (GUI, RDBMS, ODBC, SQL, ADO, DCOM/COM, ActiveX/OLE).
According to Pierre Paquete, Imperial's Project Manager for Automated Data Collection, "ASI was chosen because of the experienced level of staff and the advanced modularity of ATLink(tm) open systems technology that will reduce costs associated with both the implementation and maintenance of the application. ATLink(tm) is flexible in meeting our current specific needs and can easily be adapted to future technical advancements. Finally, ASI has demonstrated a willingness to establish a strong partnership. We feel that is essential to a successful interactive working relationship in this innovative environment."
ATLink(tm) will be used at Aylmer to track 200-kilogram cases of semi-finished tobacco throughout the grading process in real-time. The data collection devices will be advanced VMU's (vehicle mounted units) with bar-code scanners. Mounted on the forklift trucks, the touch-screen based Windows(tm)* 95 terminals will feature a small business-rule driven Visual Basic developed application.
Paquete said, "Our goal is to empower our shop floor users to work in self-directed teams to control their own business process. That's why we felt that user-friendly, GUI terminals were essential tools. ATLink(tm) enables bi-directional data flow between the terminals and the ERP system for real-time data entry. It puts powerful warehouse management tools at the team member's disposal, just as if they were sitting in front of a conventional terminal."
Paul Abraham, Manager of Engineering for ASI, said, "The ATLink(tm) product will link to the GUI terminal via ASI's standard interface written in Microsoft's Visual Basic. This eliminates 90% of the custom code typically required for this type of implementation. The other 10% will be specific to Imperial's system."
Advanced Systems International is a leading supplier of time and attendance and labor allocation applications, as well as data distribution and access (DDA) solutions for the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) environment. ASI's cost effective, comprehensive product offering includes the application software, hardware, implementation services and on-going support necessary for rapid deployment of enterprise-wide distributed processing. Key markets include automotive, automotive supply, packaged goods, pharmaceuticals, food processing and other manufacturing industries.
