LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 1999--At NAB'99, Avid(R) Technology, Inc. and Sony Corporation today announced that they have agreed to create an alliance to pursue the development of new post-production and broadcast news products.

Under this alliance, the two companies intend to execute an agreement to work together to create an Avid nonlinear news editing system that will interoperate with Sony's new line of MPEG -based broadcast equipment. Designed on the Avid NewsCutter(R) digital nonlinear news editing system, the system would provide all the features and capabilities of the NewsCutter product and would support the MPEG format. The two companies also intend to collaborate to enable the current NewsCutter product to interoperate with Sony's DVCAM equipment, in addition to its current DV capabilities.

Finally, Avid and Sony intend to collaborate on 24P post-production workflow solutions for High Definition television as well as High Definition solutions for broadcast news.

"We are pleased to announce our alliance with Sony, the leader of the broadcasting industry," stated Bill Miller, chairman and CEO of Avid Technology, Inc. "By combining Sony's MPEG expertise and technology with Avid's world-class NewsCutter nonlinear technology, we can provide our customers a great MPEG news editing solution. As broadcasters adopt MPEG -based systems, this alliance will allow us to provide them with a seamless method of acquisition, editing and playback for the entire news production process."

"Avid is the number one company for nonlinear editing systems," said Mitsuru Ohki, president of Sony Corporation's Broadcasting and Professional Systems Company. "Our collaboration with Avid is what the market requested, and I believe that many of our customers will benefit from the Sony-Avid alliance. Together with Avid, Sony aims to create an efficient production environment by utilizing DV and MPEG compression technologies, as well as to promote the future growth of HDTV.

"Ever since Sony launched the concept of an ' MPEG World' at last year's NAB, the industry responded with the establishment of a Pro- MPEG Forum to spread the use of MPEG throughout the industry. Avid's commitment today further strengthens MPEG 's role as an industry-wide standard for the future," added Ohki.

The Sony compatible Avid MPEG editing solution would initially be available as an upgrade to the Avid NewsCutter family of products.
