re: "The upsetting factor is that people of his ilk (Pfeiffer) will to a certain extent damage and crash good companies (Compaq included) and good people and somehow end up with personal benefits. "

Pfeiffer has seemed obsessed with "beating" Intel over the past few years. For some reason he thought he could create a competitor for Intel that would make the processor mean less and the Box... that is the Compaq box mean more. What he didn't count on is a major destabilization of the processor pricing that in the end would hurt Compaq much more than others.

While Pfieffer should have had his focus on the integration of Digital, he had to deal with the unpredictable PC price erosion that he helped create. The bottom line is Intel increased margins and sales the last couple of quarter while AMD is now losing buckets of money and Compaq can't even identify a greater than 50% earnings shortfall until a week after the quarter closes.

Some of us remember the last time Compaq tried to prop up AMD with the purchase of a 486SX-66... there was a big write-off and fire sale of product when that Pentium became king and it became clear to the world that Intel was not going to roll over. Well, Intel didn't roll over this time either.

Hopefully the new leadership at Compaq will consider a strong alignment with Intel vs the recent war.

Regards,
Nitt
