Dell and HP are doing pretty well making a name for themselves regardless of "Intel Inside."

Compaq has also done very well. They originally made a name for themselves by building more reliable boxes than their competitors, but the "Intel Inside" program allowed companies like Dell and HP to build quality low cost systems without any engineering.

Compaq which has to pay for their own engineering infrastructure, has never been happy with the fact that Intel enabled their competition, and at the same time takes most of the profit out of each box.
