Joan, speaking quite seriously, I remember the crash of '87 very well. I remember the first half of 1982; during the summer the Dow was around 800 and the bears were predicting a bottom of 500. (Seems incredible, doesn't it?) I remember the agonizing end of the Nifty Fifty in the mid-70s. Don't talk to me about Armageddon, dear.

A lot of people have been playing in the market with money they shouldn't and taking risks that they shouldn't. Some of what I have read posted on SI that passes for "due diligence" sends me screaming for the aspirin bottle--and this is premium site!

A whole generation has grown up with a market whose primary trend has been up; they have been trained as thoroughly as Pavlov's dogs to buy on the dips and wouldn't know a serious correction until it reached into their pockets and removed their wallets. These are people who wouldn't know what valuation techniques are if you sent it to them via e-mail in solid caps. The same people who drove the Internet-related stocks to such dizzying heights that the professionals were forced to participate in the mania to maintain performance for their clients (muttering "tulips" all the while).

We have not seen anything like Armageddon yet. If we do, we shall have set ourselves up for it with greed and ignorance.

I shall climb off my soap box now and return control of the vertical and the horizontal to SI.
