The table shows the closing bid and ask quotes of each market
maker (MM) that deals in HVAR stock. MMs that want more stock will have a high bid (close to the best bid), and usually a ridiculously high asking price. MMs that want less stock in their inventory will have an ask near the best ask, and an unusually low bid price (under that of the other MMs). Thus, the best bid and the best ask prices are usually, but not always, from two different MMs. Your market buy order is executed at the MM with the best asking price. Your market sell order will execute at the best bid price, assuming the quantity is not too large. Hope this helps.
