A@P - no doubt what you are seeing will never be forgotten. Liberty should never be taken for granted. I vividly recall travelling through East Germany in 1987 and I remember the Soviet tank (T 72's etc) farms, the Mil 'Bear' helicopters flying overhead (yes they are big), the minefield at the froniter, the immigration police, the border troops, the Soviet soliders, guys looking at you through binoculars from watch towers, the lack of improvements in just about everything since 1945 - and especially the look of the people who were trapped within those borders. You could tell what they were thinking just by the way they looked at you - the free, healthy western tourist. And this was just over 10 years ago!! I know that you must address short-term needs - but IMO education is the best way forward to help solve the problems between peoples. If I were you I would consider setting up a foundation to provide books, learning materials, etc. for the schools and eventually university scholarships to enable the best to pursue their education. This is what I intend to do when the time comes for me. Best of luck and do what you can, David :)
