Appx. 4 years ago UNHCR developed a very sophisticated database program explicitly for the purpose of tracking refugees to help reunite them. It was multi-lingual and ran on laptops. Any sign of it in use there?

I wrote a software product that was the reporting component of that project; it was one of my happiest days as a software developer when they included it and wrote us a commendation letter.

Now I can only pray its finding some good use. Gathering the data is no small matter. You need fluent speakers in all the relevant local dialects, copious data entry (tracking familial connections is a complex database relationship), and of course, refugees continue to move due to changing circumstances.

Though less dramatic than outright murder and rape, confiscating all the refugees' travel papers was one of Milosevic's cruelest tactics. It makes this process infinitely more difficult and time consuming, and just increases the refugees' suffering exponentially.

The feeling of powerlessness in the face of this disaster is awful. My family is holding you in our hearts and minds. -- Alan
