I have to disagree with you Maurice. CDMA uses a spreading of the signal and codes that are orthogonal to separate the different users. This spreading is called processing gain and in a fixed bandwidth system, the higher the data rate, the less the processing gain.

Let me give you an illustration as an example. Suppose you are in a room with your self and one other person. It is very easy to carry on a conversation. You can whisper and both can easily be heard. Now lets start filling up the room with other couples engaged in conversation. As the number of people increase, you must talk louder to be heard and you can reach a point where you almost have to shout to be heard. The point is that as you increase the people, background noise increases and the separation between individuals decreases making individual conversation more difficult. This is kind of the way that CDMA works. The point where the separation is not great enough or the background noise becomes too loud is a point where you start reaching capacity limits. Just like in the room, sometimes the louder people are heard and the not so loud get lost in the noise.

Now suppose you separate the individual conversationalists by a great distance and they have to adjust how loud they talk as the din in the background rises and falls. This is why I talked about power control in space being different than a terrestrial system and I think the capacity numbers are over stated.

Here again, these are only my opinions.
