John - it's possible that the author actually was able to test one of the new drives, so he was comfortable making the statement about speed and was then speculating about the long-term reliability of the product.
It's also possible that the supposedly heavy promotion of the LS-120 in the New York market is designed to clear up the inventory of the old model and the release of their new product in imminent.
All highly speculative, and I still think IOM has too much of a lead in the market for any competitor to overcome. Though the competition could create more marketing pressure that will further depress profits.
