Only if we let them, my friend. Over the long term truth will emerge. The same thing will happen to the i-nuts like AMZN.

I have a very close friend who is an analyst, and I asked her pointedly about these strange recommendations. She told me that the pressure to perform on a short-terms basis is enormous, and that pressure extends to portfolio managers. She told me they are evaluated on a quarterly basis.

Now imagine, these people no longer have the luxury of looking at a 3-5 year horizon. They are looking quarter to quarter. On top of that you have the political pressure if the banking side. You cannot issue "sell" ratings when you want the debenture business.

So while we get angry with some of them for ignoring what is patently obvious to us, I think we need to understand the very real pressures under which they operate. If we didn't react so precipitously to the Kurlacks of this world, then perhaps the pressure would ease on many analysts and we could get more balanced, long-term analysis. I guess what I'm driving at is that the investing public is also to blame.
