Unisys Donates Servers to Penn State to Foster Skills in Using SAP Enterprise Resource Planning Software
Part of a State initiative to keep high-tech jobs in Pennsylvania
BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999-- Unisys today announced its donation to the Pennsylvania State University of four Aquanta ES2023R enterprise servers that will run SAP R/3 enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for business and systems engineering applications.

The servers have a total value of $311,000 and can support about 250 concurrent users.

At Penn State, the Unisys hardware will run the SAP R/3 application software for students in selected courses in business logistics, management science and information systems, and industrial engineering at the University Park campus; industrial engineering at Penn State Great Valley; and management information systems at Penn State Erie.

The Unisys donation reinforces the commitment made by the company to help keep high-tech talent in Pennsylvania. Last month, Unisys became the first Pennsylvania company named to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Keystone State Honor Roll, a designation made by the Commonwealth for companies that have made commitments to create college internships and job opportunities in Pennsylvania.

The company was recognized for its support for governor Tom Ridge's SciTech Scholars program, which encourages scholarships and other initiatives to keep high-tech talent in the state.

''The importance placed by Unisys on ensuring the successful deployment of SAP R/3 solutions for our customers reflects our belief that strong ERP skills represent a distinct competitive advantage for companies and their prospective employees,'' said Robert Brust, Unisys chief financial officer.

''By helping to foster SAP expertise where so much of Pennsylvania's resources for high-tech scholarship are concentrated, we hope to strengthen the Commonwealth's ability to put these valuable skills to work right here in our state.''

Enterprise resource planning software changes the way companies do business by integrating the flow of information throughout the organization. It models and automates many of the basic processes of a company, from finance and procurement to the shop floor.

''ERP applications are extremely complex and require state-of-the-art hardware to run efficiently,'' said J. Gary Augustson, Penn State Vice Provost for Information Technology. ''We are grateful to Unisys for their commitment to providing the combination of servers that will make the application of this software a success.''

Augustson noted that ERP has the potential to change the culture of a business organization, because it integrates all of a company's information systems, thus allowing horizontal rather than the more traditional vertical decision-making.

''The widespread use of SAP in Fortune 500 companies means that many of our graduates will have a competitive edge as a result of using the software while they are students,'' he said. ''They will be better prepared to lead our nation's technology driven companies and organizations well into the next century.''

Augustson also pointed out that partnerships with Unisys and SAP have the potential to strengthen programs in Penn State's new School of Information Sciences and Technology, which will admit its first students this fall.

Unisys delivers SAP R/3 solutions that leverage Unisys strengths in three proven areas: world-class experience and expertise in complex implementation projects, industry-leading servers certified and optimized for SAP R/3 applications and a strategic alliance with Microsoft that positions Unisys as a world-class provider of solutions based on Windows NT.

The Aquanta ES series servers donated to Penn State handle tasks requiring high performance, uninterrupted availability and ease of administration, adding mainframe-class software and hardware to building block technologies from Intel, Microsoft and other Unisys Technology Alliance Partners.

SAP America, based in Newtown Square, PA, provided the software.

Representatives from both companies and Penn State officially unveiled the new Unisys servers at University Park campus April 16.
