The latest from Telecom Italia: >>> April 20, 1999 14:51 T.Italia backs Telekom deal on conditions -source MILAN, April 20 (Reuters) - The board of Telecom Italia on Tuesday backed a proposed mega-merger with Deutsche Telekom but only on certain conditions, a source close to the Italian telecoms group said. Telecom Italia, which has been studying what could be one of the largest corporate deals ever as a way of escaping a $65 billion hostile bid from Olivetti , now appears less likely to hold a joint news conference with Deutsche Telekom planned for Wednesday to unveil the deal, the source said.
