Texaco Forms Unit to Research Fuel Cells for Electric Cars

Texaco Forms Unit to Research Fuel Cells for Electric Cars

White Plains, New York, April 20 (Bloomberg) -- Texaco Inc., the third-largest
U.S. oil company, said it formed a new business, Texaco Energy Systems Inc.,
to conduct research on fuel cells for electric cars.

Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity. Scientists hope cars powered by the
cells eventually will perform as well as cars with internal combustion engines,
while reducing pollution and noise.

Texaco and other oil companies want to be at the forefront of fuel-cell
technology. A phase-out of combustion engines would threaten profits at the
companies' oil and refining businesses.

White Plains, New York-based Texaco also said it will join the California Fuel
Cell Partnership, a collaboration of energy companies, auto makers and
California government officials. The partnership plans to complete about 40 cars
and 25 buses powered by fuel cells by 2003.
