Richard, I've gone both ways:

I've held a profitable option too long and watched it expire worthless.

I've sold a profitable option too early, and missed big earnings upsides.

In review, I'd rather sell at a profit too early than hold too long and lose everything. My best advice is set a target and sell when you hit it, regardless of the time left on the option. Be very firm in this practice and you'll increase your odds of coming out ahead.
