Thanks for the explanation. What exactly are ESTs that U Washington are making available for free? Just sequencing fragments of DNA is not even half the battle; it is necessary to locate genes in the sequence (not easy) and then determine their function(really hard).

There is article in todays WSJ on SmithKlines deals with a Cadus and a private German biotech company to determine gene functions from genes
obtained with its deal with HGSI. Has anybody done anything commercial yet with the data from U Washington?
