Havent read the book, but it sounds right up my alley. Im somewhat of a history freak of the Hundred Years War, which fits in exactly with that assessment. The modern day nation-state is an after effect of the struggle between France and England. The War accomplished little directly for the English, save to destroy their last hold on the Continent. The French however came away from the conflict with a steeled national awareness and a strong centralized Monarchy. Both England and France were the world's first true nation-states. Interesting stuff. :)
