Merrill Lynch on FDX.

Online sales impact measured by Merrill analysts.
Tuesday April 20, 8:36 pm Eastern Time

NEW YORK, April 20 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch analysts at a conference Tuesday said they see electronic commerce slowing the growth of retail real estate prices, boosting Federal Express' prospects and that established retailers will gain a foothold against those who arrived online before them.

The impact of Internet on shipping has been up for debate, with the initial thinking being that FDX Corp. (FDX - news), parent of the world's largest express shipper Federal Express, would benefit from online orders delivered to residences.

Merrill's Ground and Air Freight Analyst Jeffrey Kaufman said: ''There is tremendous potential there, but not in the way it has been envisioned.''

He estimated the real benefit to Federal Express in cost savings of between $200 million-$250 million from the adoption of electronic commerce by the company's customers over the next three to five years. The savings would come from electronic processing rather than a higher volume of orders, he said.

Kaufman said the real benefit to FedEx would not be in the deliveries to residents, estimated as a $5 billion market, but rather to the $250 billion business-to-business market.
