NORWOOD, Mass., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI), today announced the world's highest performance mixed-signal, embedded, digital signal processor (DSP)-based motor controller. Optimized for industrial applications requiring high-performance processing power, speed, flexibility and precision, the ADMC401 offers unmatched performance and chip-level integration. Applications and end products to benefit from this achievement include high-end industrial servo control, high-precision factory automation systems, machine tools, robotics and uninterruptable power supplies.
The ADMC401 integrates ADI's "work horse" DSP core, the ADSP-2171, a 16-bit, fixed-point DSP, capable of processing up to 26 million instructions per second (MIPS). This represents the highest processing power available for motor control today. The DSP, combined with ADI's high-resolution, simultaneous-sampling 12-bit, analog-to-digital converter and peripherals all on one integrated circuit results in the fastest, most powerful, precise motor control solution available for high-end industrial applications.

The new device is optimized for speed, precision and control of AC induction motors (ACIM), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), brushless DC motors (BDCM) and switched reluctance (SR) motors in industrial applications that demand the highest level of processing power.
Peripherals Include Pipeline Flash 12-bit ADC System
The ADMC401 integrates the world's first embedded, 8-channel, 12-bit simultaneous sampling ADC system in a single-chip, embedded DSP motor control solution. This system permits up to eight dedicated analog inputs to be converted in less than 2 microseconds through a high-resolution 12-bit pipeline flash ADC. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 70 dB.
Other peripherals include the following: a 16-bit, three-phase PWM (pulse width modulation) unit to produce high-accuracy PWM signals with minimal processor overhead; a flexible encoder interface unit with programmable input filtering; 12 lines of programmable digital I/O; two auxiliary PWM outputs; a 16-bit watchdog timer; two 16-bit interval timers (one of which can be linked to the encoder interface unit); Power-On-Reset circuit; and a programmable interrupt controller that manages peripheral interrupts.
Fast, Flexible 26-MIPS, Fixed-Point DSP Core
The ADMC401 also utilizes ADI's popular ADSP-2171 fixed-point DSP core that permits fast motor control processing in the highly integrated environment. The ADSP-2171 DSP core is completely code-compatible with the ADSP-21xx general-purpose DSP family as well as the ADMC3xx family of embedded DSP motor controllers from Analog Devices. Using algebraic C Language-style constructs, ADI's fixed-point DSP cores allow users to easily develop programs and applications and decreases overall time-to-market. The ADMC401 includes both on-chip program and data memory in addition to an external program and data bus for adding additional external memory or other peripherals as needed.

ADMC401 software development is supported by the ADMC401-ADVEVALKIT. This low- cost development tool allows users to quickly develop applications using ADI's WindowsO-based Motion Control Debugger.
