MB: Another legend goes on to the great backside in the sky:

Legendary trainer Charlie Whittingham, who was first licensed in 1934 and inducted into racing's Hall of Fame in 1974, died Tuesday at age 86.

Among the owners whose horses were trained by Whittingham is Burt Bacharach, the composer-singer of numerous hit songs.

One day Bacharach didn't like the way one of his horses ran, and he asked Whittingham if the animal needed to be wormed.
Whittingham's reply, Jay Hovdey wrote in the 1993 book, ''Whittingham: The Story of Thoroughbred Racing Legend,'' was itself legendary:

''Burt, I haven't heard too many hit songs coming out of your piano lately. Maybe you need to get that piano wormed.''
