Montenegro raises stakes in faceoff with army

<< Montenegro raised the stakes in its confrontation with the Yugoslav army on Wednesday, threatening to dismantle a military checkpoint which has effectively blocked the border with Croatia.

Tensions between the military and civilian authorities have risen sharply since the weekend, with the local administration accusing the army of committing war crimes on the border with Kosovo and denouncing its incursion on Tuesday into a demilitarised zone on its Adriatic coast.

But government officials indicated that the immediate priority was to re-open the Croatian frontier, which was closed to foreigners on Tuesday by an army roadblock. It remained barred on Wednesday.

''The block will not last long because we will clear it,'' Deputy Prime Minister Dragisa Burzan told Reuters. ''First we will warn the army nicely, but if they do not move then I predict we will not be discussing things.'' >>

Milosevic shows can destabilise Balkans
