he was using ATHM and I was using a 56K modem. The cable seemed slower than the 56k modem

Where you going to a site you had already been to? Graphics are cached locally on your system and sites you have been to before come up much faster. Also, some sites are cached on the servers that your dialup provider has, increasing the speed with which you can access.
